FIRST STATEWIDE HIGH SCHOOL ECO-SUMMIT

All interested high school students and teachers are invited to attend the first statewide ECO-Summit for high school ecology clubs and their sponsors. The ECO-Summit will be held the week-end before Thanksgiving (Nov. 20-22) in Guthrie at Central Oklahoma Christian Camp. This is a project of OKAEE`s (Oklahoma Association for Environmental Education) student arm, called S.A.V.E. (Students Acting for a Vital Earth).

S.A.V.E. was founded by Suzanne Spradling and her Heritage Hall Ecology Club in 1990, but was limited to central Oklahoma. Scott Martin (Putnam City High School), Suzanne Spradling and I, all OKAEE board members, are organizing this event with the help of OUr Earth, the student environmental group from the University of Oklahoma.

We are planning two separate tracks, one for teacher/sponsors and one for students. We are hoping to offer overviews of various environmentalprojects available for the student groups as well as sessions to help both groups attract and motivate more students. We also plan to have some fun events during the Summit, such as hikes, a hayride, and team-building games for the students. We see this as a support group for both the sponsors and the students. We had a trial run with just Putnam City High, Putnam City West, Norman High and Norman North recently in the Wichita Mountains and found the experience invaluable to the students and the new teacher/sponsor who attended. It would also be a good opportunity for a teacher who wants to start a group to attend and find out how to do it. We hope to produce a manual for others to use from what we learn at the Summit.
