Upper Buffalo Outing Enjoyed by All
by George Brenner
The Upper Buffalo River Wilderness Area in Arkansas displayed its finest fall fashions in shades of red, green, yellow, and brown as Green Country Sierrans gathered
for a photography outing led by David Porter and Les Imboden on November 1st and 2nd. After David reviewed principles of photography, including film, lenses, aperture, filters, and composition, the group hit the Lost Valley trail Saturday morning to try their luck in capturing the elusive images of the ever-changing pan
orama. Maple, dogwood, and beech trees were just a few of the celebrities that entertained the eager shutterbugs as they pursued the perfect picture. Along the way, they encountered a walk-through cave with two large entrances on opposite sites of an outcrop. Further along, another cave beckoned exploration of its sizable room just beyond a narrow passageway.
After lunch, the lazy Buffalo River and its towering cliffs gave photographers another challenging subject. Saturday evening, Gary Miller kept a campfire
going as the group enjoyed a potluck dinner. The sounds of shutters snapping could be heard again Sunday morn
ing on the trail to Dis
mal Creek, site of a Glory Hole where waters vortex through a huge opening in a megaton boulder that was probably formed by eons of running water. Although dry on this occasion, the site provided interesting photographic perspectives from above and below the dramatic formation.

A stop of Bill’s BBQ in Springdale concluded what participants probably thought was The Perfect Outing.
