Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge Outing for Inner City Kids

April 21, 2005

by Dave Zucconi

......Picked up 4 kids in the Youth at Heart van and headed for the Wichita Wildlife Refuge on Friday (Earth Day. Stopped in OKC to borrow sl. bags, pads, tents from the OKC ICO...thanks to Jay Trenary, their ICO Chair).............set up camp at Doris Campground in the WWR under a near-full moon, ate some late-nite hot dogs around a campfire........heard a LARGE creature run thru the campground that night............eggs, ham & pancakes for breakfast, then off to the Environmental Education Center for a great program on ecology by Brandon. After, a visit to the prairie dog towns, ogling bison & long-horn along the way........lunch, break camp, then a two-hour adventure hike along the kite trail to "Forty-foot Hole" and beyond to the cobblestone dam.......on the return, dropped off equipment in OKC then sped home.

The kids impression?: "Let's go back next week!".
