Illinois Canoe float for Inner City kids

May 21, 2005

by Dave Zuconni

What a great day for a canoe trip! Thanks to arrangements made by David Rudd, and the helpfulness of the Hanging Rock folks, and the able assistance of Charlie Transue, George Brenner & Bob Ronne, we were able to give 9 youngsters a memorable outing on the Illinois. Yours truly rode with the kids and their adult sponsors on the Youth at Heart bus (purple, no less!) and met the others at Hanging Rock. Residents of Mohawk Manor, Apache Manor & Seminole Hills, these youngsters serve as team monitors for younger children and were thus being rewarded for their good work. The water was warm, the day balmy, and most of us only tipped over once. When it was time for lunch, we discovered that our sandwich buns were still on the bus, so meat & cheese rolls, wrapped in lettuce, became the lunch of the day (it works when you're hungry). New paddlers learned a lot; some of us "experienced" paddlers learned that we have a lot more to learn!
