Outing Rating Guide

IMPORTANT: An outing's rating does not necessarily mean it contains ALL of the criteria in its designated level. Outings are rated by the highest level in which any two criteria exist. If an additional criterion exists in a higher level, the outing will receive a dual designation, i.e., easy to moderate or moderate to strenuous.

EASY - Suitable for any person of any age. At least TWO of the following criteria exist:

No previous experience or special equipment is needed.
The hike is on a fairly level, established trail.
Hikes will be at an easy pace for less than 4 hours.
Altitudes are below 5,000 feet.

MODERATE - Suitable for anyone reasonably fit who can walk one mile in less than 30 minutes. At least TWO of the following criteria exist:

Previous experience and specialized equipment is helpful.
The trail grade is fairly steep at times and/or rough or rocky.
Significant elevation changes exist - 200 feet per mile or greater.
Altitudes are above 8,000 feet.
If hiking, daily mileage of 8 miles or more.
If backpacking, daily mileage of 5 miles or more.

STRENUOUS - Suitable for anyone reasonably fit who can walk three miles in less than one hour. At least TWO of the following criteria exist:

Previous experience and special equipment is important.
Travel is off trail (i.e., boulder hopping/bushwhacking)
Relentless elevation changes - 500 feet per mile or greater.
If hiking, daily mileage of 10 miles or more.
If backpacking, daily mileage of 8 miles or more.
Altitudes above 10,000 feet.
