Book Club

We had a great discussion last meeting.

Here are the books we decided to read for the coming quarter.

  • As you know, Barbara Kingsolver’s "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle"  forms the backbone of this year’s study.

    • It's the story of how one family was changed by a year of eating food produced from the same place where they worked, went to school, met with neighbors, drank the water, and breathed the air.

Below are our meeting dates and the chapters we’ll discuss.  One additional full book will be discussed each month.

  • July 14

    • Chapter 10 “Eating Neighborly: Late June Chapter 11 “Slow Food Nations: Late June”

    • "Blessed Unrest" by Paul Hawken

    • World-renowned environmentalist Hawken tells what is going right in this world, including a guide to projects led by environmental and social justice movements—an invaluable resource and inspiration.

  • August 11

    • Chapter 12 “Zucchini Larceny: Late July

    • Chapter 13 “Life in a Red State: August”

    • "A Manifesto for Food And Seed" edited by Vandana Shiva

    • Essays by Shiva, Michael Pollan, Prince Charles, Carlo Petrini, and Jamey Lionette show how to improve a world where of the 80,000 edible plants used for food, only about 150 are being cultivated, and just eight are traded globally.

  • September 8

    • Chapter 14 “You Can’t Run away on Harvest Day:

    • September”

    • Chapter 15 “Where Fish Wear Crowns: September”

    • "Sex, Economy, Freedom and Community" by Wendell Berry

    • In eight visionary essays, Berry sounds the themes of decentralization, renewal of community and ecological awareness. The Kentucky poet/ farmer/ conservationist urges Americans to "waste less, spend less, use less, want less, need less."

Please join us whether you have read all of the selections or only part, or just want to explore strategies for healthy sustainable eating.

These next selections are a feast.  Hope you'll join us.
