sale suspend by governor back to water sale main page Jan 11th, 2002
The Governor's office announced today (Jan 11, 2002) that
negotiations with Texas to sell Kiamichi water are off. Purportedly it's
because Texas officials wouldn't give us enough money, and because they don't
like the stipulations that the water spigot could be turned off during a
drought. However, I can't help but believe that this could at least partially
be a face-saving effort by the Governor to back out of this deal given the
growing opposition by the people, and by legislators like Rep. Debbie
Blackburn and others.
The coalition that has developed between the environmental
community and the Southern Oklahoma Water Alliance (SOWA) as well as other
groups like the Farm Bureau and the independent oil producers indicated just
how broad the opposition to the deal was.
However, this probably isn't the end of the fight. The water
sale proponents are probably just regrouping so we need to continue to keep
the pressure on. We will continue to be diligent in our efforts to make sure
that no new dams or reservoirs are constructed, and to make sure that the
ecological health and integrity of our river ecosystems are maintained. Stay
posted for further developments.
