Statement of Purpose

"To explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the Earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the Earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality ofthe natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives."

Established in 1972, the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club has over 3,000 dues paying members in Oklahoma with monthly meetings in Norman (Red Earth Group), Oklahoma City (Cimarron Group) and Tulsa (Green Country Group). Through the efforts of numerous dedicated volunteers and a small staff, the Oklahoma Chapter organizes frequent outdoor activities, social events, conservation activities, and educational outreach efforts aimed at furthering the mission of the Sierra Club.

Standing committees at both the local and state level integral to the success of the Oklahoma Chapter include the Conservation Committee, Outings, Political Committee, and Legislative Committee. From local food fairs and backpacking trips to film festivals and legislative lobbying, committee involvement offers opportunities to promote sustainability and environmental conservation with some of the most dedicated, kind-hearted folks in Oklahoma!

Over the years, the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club has successfully protected Oklahoma's wildlife, preserved its natural resources, and educated the public on many issues at the local, state, and federal level. The volunteers and partners of the Sierra Club strive to be stewards of Oklahoma's environment and have a Proud History of Accomplishments.

Oklahoma Chapter Staff

Chapter Director
David Ocamb

David Ocamb is joining the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club as its new Chapter Director. A native Oklahoman, David most recently served as the Political Director for a national political action committee focused on electing American Indian candidates to office, including work on numerous races in Oklahoma.

David’s passion for environmental issues began in high school where he belonged to his high school’s environmental club. It extended to his time at Baylor, where he graduated with his undergraduate degree as well as graduating top in his class with his Masters in Political Science.

Prior to joining the club, David served as Policy Director overseeing the Policy and Communications departments for a gubernatorial campaign in Texas. Additionally, David has worked with a national political messaging and consulting firm, including extensive work on numerous statewide and State Senate races in Oklahoma as well as extensive issue advocacy and grassroots lobbying work with the Environmental Defense Fund and League of Conservation Voters.

Associate Field Organizer
Whitney Pearson

A native Oklahoman, Whitney is an Associate Field Organizer with the Sierra Club's National Beyond Coal Campaign. Whitney is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and has been actively engaged with the Sierra Club and other environmental organizations since her university days. While at the University of Oklahoma, Whitney spearheaded the Campus Climate Challenge through the Sierra Student Coalition and OUr Earth. The Climate Challenge, signed by OU President David Boren, signalled a commitment by the University of Oklahoma to decrease its carbon emissions.

Subsequent to her graduation from OU, Whitney worked an associate at Pearson Public Relations. As the Associate Field Organizer, Whitney is focused on moving Oklahoma energy production and consumption beyond coal and emphasizing a clean energy economy in Oklahoma.
